by Markus Maiwald
TL;DR Most men run on a broken map of female psychology built by other men, movies, and internet theories. Fifty truths about how attractive women actually think, synthesized into one field report. She disqualifies rather than selects; a yes is not desire; mystery is not a strategy; female desire is responsive and the bedroom is downstream of the week; money is a proxy for traits; commitment is renewed weekly; the proposal is not the decision, the silence is the alarm. Where what men want is almost entirely free, what women want is exacting, cumulative, and continuous. The two maps do not match, and the mismatch is why both sexes keep getting the same results while blaming each other. Understanding how women work is not manipulation. It is the minimum for becoming someone worth choosing.
What Women Want

The majority of men have never been told the truth about how attractive women actually think. The model they run on was built by other men, shaped by movies, sharpened by internet theories. And that broken map is the reason they keep getting the same results, blaming everything except the map.

The Broken Map

Where Part 1 was simple, this one is not.

What men want fits on a single page and almost none of it costs a dollar. What women want is a fifty-point protocol running continuously, and most men do not even know it is running. That is not a moral judgment on women. It is the diagnosis of the gap.

The map most men use for women was built by other men. Shaped by movies. Sharpened by internet theories that have nothing to do with reality. The men who run that map keep arriving at the wrong destination and blaming the terrain, the weather, the women, anything but the map.

What follows is a synthesis of fifty truths about how attractive women actually think, feel, and decide, the ones most women will not say out loud. Compressed into movements, not numbered, because the point is not the list. The point is the architecture underneath it.

Understanding how women actually work is not manipulation. It is the bare minimum for becoming someone worth choosing.

The First Thirty Seconds

The first map failure is timing.

Looks get you considered, nothing else. A face buys a man about four seconds of consideration. After that she is reading how he moves, how he speaks, what he says, how he says it. The face got him in the door. The same face does not keep him in the room. Men overinvest in the thing that gets the smallest return and underinvest in everything that decides whether she stays past minute two. They call her shallow. She is not shallow. They are optimizing for the wrong variables.

She decided within the first thirty seconds. Thin-slice judgment research is brutal. Thirty-second behavioral samples predict long-term outcomes with surprising accuracy. In speed-dating studies, researchers paused dates at the thirty-second mark; the thirty-second rating predicted the six-minute decision almost perfectly. What a man thinks is happening on a date is not what is happening. He thinks he is earning the next stage. He is defending an opening verdict that was written before he sat down. Her brain spends the rest of the date looking for data that confirms the verdict, not evidence that overturns it.

The first thirty seconds is not the warm-up. It is the game. And by the time most men sit down, the game is already over.

Confidence, Prestige, and the Real Currency

Real confidence is invisible until tested. The pickup-artist generation hyperfixated on the wrong signals. There are two kinds of social rank. Dominance is enforced, loud, performative. Respect me or else. Prestige is granted, quiet, settled. I already know what I’m worth. To a woman with options, loud reads as a man who has to force his status because he cannot earn it. The man who walks in quiet, stands tall, does not perform, does not need her approval, that is the one who stands out. The cartoon version of dominant body language is the costume confidence wears when it is not there.

She is not looking for a ten. She is looking for someone who is not a project. Across every culture studied, women rank reliability and emotional stability above physical attractiveness for long-term partners. She is not running a selection model. She is running a disqualification model. The question she is asking is not what is amazing about him? It is what is broken? One major liability tanks the whole stack. No amount of maxing in one category compensates for a deal-breaker in another. Men chase the dating profile, the height, the income, the jawline, while the variable actually filtering them out is the part of their life they are not attending to: financial chaos, untreated mental health, anger they cannot manage, an ex situation they will not end, attachment issues, attunement skills. The good woman is not looking for elite. She is looking for solid with no glaring liabilities.

Mystery is not a strategy. It is a side effect of having a life. Scarcity increases desirability, but only when the scarcity reads as real. Manufactured scarcity reads as manipulation. Attractive women have been on the receiving end of every game in the book; they clock manufactured distance instantly. The man playing it cool, pretending to be busy, parading other women to trigger a reaction while actually being available twenty-four seven, is running a script she has already seen a hundred times. Real unavailability is the only kind that works. The man who actually has a full life, actually cannot talk because he is doing something, does not have to perform mystery. He is mystery, because he is on his own mission. The question is not how do I seem busy? It is is there anything in my life worth being unavailable for? If the answer is no, the fix is not a better script. It is building a life.

Signals, Tests, and the Communications Gap

She initiates more than you think, non-verbally. Observational research at parties and bars found that women initiate roughly two-thirds of approaches with non-verbal cues, before the man perceives himself as making the first move. The green light is given before he speaks. He is either confirming a signal she already gave or missing it entirely. He is almost never creating interest from scratch. The skill is reading the signal, not cold-opening with false confidence.

She was intimidated by me is almost never the answer. When an attractive woman avoids a man, it is almost never because he was too much for her. It is because she did not feel pulled toward him. The intimidation story is ego protection. It blocks the feedback loop and keeps a man doing the same things that did not work the first time, because if the variable is her psychology, he does not have to change anything. Lack of pull is fixable. The intimidation story is not.

Nothing’s wrong is a test, not a statement. It is almost never fine. She is asking you to read the temperature of the room without her spelling it out. Yes, this is unfair. Yes, direct communication would be cleaner. She will not. The skill being assessed is whether you can read a room you were not told to read. The default response to I’m fine is not okay then. That is a failure. The response that scores is: Are you sure? Because the room feels different to me. Can you tell me what’s going on?

Her tone is the headline. Her words are the article. In emotionally charged communication, the non-verbal and tonal channels carry most of the actual message. She means what is underneath the words. The tone is the message; the words are the formatting. Men keep winning arguments about what was technically correct about what was literally said, then cannot understand why she is still upset. If she says fine with a flat tone, the word is not the data. The tone is. Respond to tone first, words second, always.

Empathy is not agreement. There is a clinical distinction between validation and agreement. Validation is acknowledging that her response makes sense given her experience. It does not require agreement, and it does not concede that her conclusion is correct. I understand why you feel that way is not you’re right. Most men refuse to empathize because they collapse the two and think empathy erodes their spine. It does not. It stops the fight. Withholding validation out of pride keeps the conflict alive longer than the original disagreement deserved.

Emotional reactions are almost never about the surface trigger. Clinically, this is called stacking. She is not reacting to the small thing. She is reacting to the small thing on top of the nine other small things you did not notice. The math is hidden because she did not name those small things when they happened. When chapter ten erupts, it looks disproportionate. It is not. It is exactly proportionate to a ledger you have not read. The question is never why is she so upset about nothing? The question is what is this sitting on top of?

Desire, the Bedroom, and the Week

Here is where the male map fails hardest.

Her arousal is not on his timeline. Female sexual response runs on a dual-control model: an accelerator (cues that turn desire on) and a brake (cues that turn it off). Female desire is mostly responsive, not spontaneous. Roughly seventy-five percent of men experience desire as spontaneous. Only about fifteen percent of women do. The majority of women experience desire as a result of context, not the trigger for it. Her desire is not waiting to be activated at ten p.m. It is contextual, cumulative, built from how the day went, how the week went, how the last six interactions felt. Sex starts when he walks in the door, not when he gets in bed. Men who focus on fixing what happens in bed are touching the result and ignoring the cause.

Wanting it less does not mean wanting him less. The brake can be pressed for many reasons that have nothing to do with him: stress, undersleep, hormonal disruption, contraceptives, postpartum, menopause, unresolved relationship tension. Men personalize the physiological reality, then either pressure her or pull away. Both reliably press the brake harder. Everything he does to fix it makes the brake heavier. The intervention is reducing what is pressing the brake, not pushing the accelerator.

Performance is not the metric. Attunement is. The strongest predictor of female sexual satisfaction across multiple studies is not technique, duration, size, frequency, or skill. It is a felt sense of being fully seen by her partner during sex. Is he here with me? Mechanical excellence without presence reads as masturbation with extra steps. The internal question is not am I doing well? That question produces performance anxiety. The question is am I with her right now? She can feel that instantly.

Initiation is a thermometer. The rate at which a woman initiates physical intimacy is one of the most reliable behavioral indicators in clinical couples work. Not her general libido. Her libido toward this specific partner. A woman with a high baseline drive who never initiates with him is not low-libido. She is low-libido with him. That is not the same diagnosis, and it is not fixed by fixing libido. It is fixed by addressing the temperature between them. A woman who wants a man reaches for him. The reaching is not optional. It is a signal. The whole women just have lower libidos story is a very comforting story, especially for the man with no desire to look at why his specific woman stopped reaching for him.

Money, Status, and What They Actually Signal

She does not want your money. She wants what your money signals. Cross-cultural data consistently ranks good financial prospects as a long-term preference. But income is read as a proxy for the traits behind it: discipline, conscientiousness, planning horizon, competence, direction, commitment, restraint. Not the dollar amount. This is why a broke man with a clear trajectory outperforms a stagnant six-figure earner in long-term selection. The number is downstream. The traits are upstream. A man on the climb beats a man parked at the plateau every time. The salary in year three does not predict attraction. The slope of the line does.

Provision has four legs, not one. Financial, logistical, physical, emotional. Holding up only the financial leg means three legs are missing. She feels every missing one every day. Men who provide financially feel they are holding up their end and cannot fathom her dissatisfaction. Financial provision is also the easiest of the four, because it requires the least daily presence, which is why men overindex on it.

Status she actually sees is functional, not symbolic. Observed obedience and respect in the room she is in carries more attraction weight than abstract titles she will never witness. A construction foreman commanding his site has more attraction-relevant status than a finance executive who gets ignored by his team. She is reading the room she is in, not the LinkedIn profile she is not. Invest in being respected by the people in the same rooms as you. Titles she never sees evaporate the moment she walks into a room where the title means nothing.

She notices how the waiter treats him. The waiter rule. How a person treats service staff is a near-perfect predictor of how they will treat people with less power over time. For her it is not a character test. It is a future-self prediction. How he treats people with less power is how he will treat her once courtship ends and she is no longer being optimized for. The date is not the date. The date is every interaction she watched you have on the way and during. Every micro-interaction with servers, doormen, valets, friends. She is watching the seams, because the seams are where the truth shows.

Spending on her is not the same as investing in her. Costly gifts signal commitment only when they cannot be substituted, when the cost is in personal time, attention, and knowledge of her. Money requires no thought. Attention requires presence. The hierarchy she runs: being noticed, being known, being understood, then somewhere lower, being provided for financially. The expensive dinner is not at the top. The cheap, thoughtful, specific gesture beats the expensive generic one every time.

The Selection Model

Her standards are a filter, not a wish list. Standards operate like any filter: their job is to throw out bad fits quickly so she does not waste time. High-value selectors operate on exclusion criteria, not inclusion criteria. When a man tries to talk a woman out of her standards, he misses the function. The standards are the entry door, the thing cleared before selection happens. The men who argue with the filter are admitting they cannot clear it, because the men who clear it never have to discuss it.

What she says her type is and what her pattern is are almost never the same. Researchers tracked what people said they wanted and compared it to who they actually picked at speed dating. What people say they want has almost zero predictive validity for who they choose. Her type is encoded in her last three relationships, not in her stated preferences. The stated story is the story she tells herself about the track record. Believing the stated preferences and ignoring the pattern is how men spend years with someone who was never going to choose them.

The first ninety days are an audit, not a celebration. Most men, once committed, relax. She is running a background check. Early-stage attraction has high arousal and low information. In the first thirty to ninety days she is gathering everything she needs for the long-term decision: how you handle stress, how you manage money, how you treat people when she is not around, what you do with your time. The version of you she sees during this window is the one she uses to decide whether there is a month thirteen.

The bar is not good enough. The bar is better than alone. Roughly seventy percent of US divorces are initiated by women, and that number has stayed stable across decades, tracking female financial independence. As a woman’s baseline quality of life improves, the bar a partner has to clear is no longer is he better than another man? It is is he better than my own life alone? A man has to be additive to her life, not equivalent. A man who simply treats her well and does the bare minimum has not cleared the bar. He has met the floor. The question is whether he is adding more to her life than she already has alone.

She is looking for a reason to stay, not a reason to leave. Decades of marriage research found a specific ratio: roughly five positive interactions for every one negative during conflict, twenty to one in everyday life. Red flags only matter when the green ones run out. Most men play defense, don’t mess up, don’t let her find a reason. The actual game is offense: give her reasons to lean in. Every interaction is a chance to add a green flag or fail to. Most men are passive in a game that rewards being active.

Commitment Is Renewable

Here is the part that breaks men who think the deal is closed.

The floor you set is the floor she lives on. Her standards rise when you raise them and drop when you do not. What is tolerated becomes a baseline, within weeks, sometimes days. The floor of acceptable behavior becomes the new normal. If the floor is low, she lives on the low floor. If it is high, she rises to it, or she leaves because the mismatch is unlivable. The first time anything unacceptable happens, you name it in that moment. Not the tenth time. The first. That is the moment the standard is set or negotiated away.

She has a running narrative. He has moments. Women encode and retrieve relational events with more detail, more emotional context, more narrative coherence. He remembers the highlight reel. She remembers the entire season. She is writing a continuous story from the beginning. Every interaction is a chapter. When she blows up over nothing, it was never nothing. It was chapter forty-seven. You are at chapter forty-three. Her reaction makes no sense unless you have read the whole book.

Apologies do not reset the score. Negative events carry three to five times the psychological weight of equivalent positive ones. One rupture takes multiple repairs to neutralize. An apology does not close the loop. It opens a probationary window where the same offense repeated costs triple. In his mind the apology is the end of the conversation. In hers it is the beginning of a behavioral observation that runs for weeks. The math of repair: one rupture in trust requires roughly five consistent acts of repair to return to neutral. Most men quit at one, sometimes zero.

She can tell when you are lying, even when she lets you get away with it. Research on female social cognition shows women score higher, on average, on detecting micro-expressions and inferring mental states from limited cues. She does not always catch the specific lie. She catches the incongruence, the gap between the words and the rest of the signal stack. Most lies are not contested in the moment. The lack of contest is not exoneration. It is filing. The file stays open and gets cashed in later, often during an unrelated argument months down the line. Assume she knows. Operate accordingly.

Commitment is not a one-time deposit. It is a renewable resource. For women, commitment gets evaluated continuously, against satisfaction, perceived alternatives, accumulated investment. For a lot of women, commitment is renewed weekly. The visible decision to leave is the sum of a thousand smaller weekly decisions that quietly started tipping the other way. Men sign once and relax. The signing was the starting line. The participation that matters most begins the moment you get the commitment, not the moment after.

Sunk cost does not keep her in. It is what gets her out. For women in unsatisfying long-term partnerships, sunk cost functions as a push factor, not a pull factor. The more she has invested, the more urgent it feels to leave. She is more afraid of waking up at forty beside the wrong person than of being single at forty. Men assume length is security. She reads it as a countdown.

The Two Decisions and the Silence

She decided whether she would marry him within the first six months. Early intuitive judgments about long-term partner suitability are surprisingly stable. The gut verdict comes early. The timeline that follows is mostly confirmation-seeking, not open evaluation. A man still trying to prove himself after year four is likely trying to overturn a verdict settled at year one.

The proposal is not the decision. It is the announcement of one already made. Women report reaching the internal yes or no well before the proposal. The planning, the photographer, the ring: that is theater. The verdict was earlier. Optimizing for the proposal while the relationship has unresolved gaps is solving the wrong problem. The ring does not determine the answer. The ordinary Tuesday evenings before it did.

The silence is the alarm. The most dangerous moment in a relationship is the one that looks the calmest. I’m not going to fight about this usually means I’ve already decided. The stage right before exit is not characterized by increased conflict. It is characterized by withdrawal. The fighting stops. The complaints stop. In his mind the relationship has calmed down. In hers, she is done arguing. She learned that the issues she raised are issues you will not meet her on, and she is no longer interested in being told she is wrong or that her needs are too much. Complaints are engagement. Complaints mean she still thinks it is worth fixing. Silence means she has made an exit plan and is waiting for the right moment. The pattern goes: loud, then quieter, then silent, then gone. Most men only start to intervene when they receive the papers, at gone.

The day she stops complaining is the day he already lost her. Do not celebrate the silence. That is the one that should terrify you.

What to Do With This

None of this is manipulation. It is the minimum for becoming someone worth choosing.

The men who will read this and get angry at women for running a continuous, exacting, renewable evaluation are the same men who refuse to read the female map at all. The men who will read it and try to weaponize it as a pickup script will fail, because the whole field report points in one direction: the fix is never a better script. The fix is being the kind of man the report describes. Solid with no glaring liabilities. On a mission. Calm. Present under load. Respectable in the rooms he is actually in. Building the traits that money only signals.

And the women who will read this and feel exposed by it should sit with why. Most of these truths are things women do not say out loud because naming the mechanism makes men defensive and gives away the diagnostic. The field report names it anyway, because the cost of not naming it is the current dating market, where both sexes lose and neither understands why.

The Other Side of the Ledger

Now stand back from both reports at once, because the two of them together are the actual diagnosis, and neither report makes sense alone.

Under the men’s question, the comment section was a casualty ward. Men wept. Men remembered one compliment for a decade. Men wrote that the only time a man gets flowers is at his funeral. A forty-year-old father of three wished someone had told him he would be nothing more than a human plow horse. The dominant emotion was not anger. It was surprise that anyone asked.

Under the women’s report, the comment section read like a man reading a lease agreement for the first time and deciding to remain a tenant of himself.

This just proves the birthrate isn’t going to climb anytime soon.

After listening to all of this, I can say with full confidence that I don’t have the energy, patience, or masochistic tendency to suffer this.

Exhausting. Just walk away, fellas.

This is why I will stay single. All of this is exhausting and not worth losing my peace.

I’m doing too well being single to want to worry about a hundred-point list and constant tests.

I’m tired, boss. It’s all so tiresome.

The more I listen to this, the more committed I am to never having another relationship after my marriage. I refuse to go through all that again.

And the line that names the asymmetry without knowing it names the asymmetry: Remember, guys, this is just the list to get the girl to consider you a potential mate. Not a guarantee of a happy life with a woman you love.

That is the whole thing. That is the entire civilizational complaint in one comment.

The man’s list is almost entirely free. A cup of tea. A hug he did not start. A thank you. An apology without a but. Please notice I exist. And the men are not getting it, and they have learned to call the absence being low-maintenance so that nobody has to notice they are starving.

The woman’s list is a continuous fifty-point protocol that runs from the first thirty seconds to the Tuesday evening before the proposal, and it is renewed weekly, and it never closes, and the man who treats the signing as the finish line is the man who gets the silence that precedes the exit papers. The men read the lease and decide to keep renting from themselves.

Two starvation modes, in the same species, in the same bedrooms, produced by the same culture that told both sexes the other one’s map was a lie.

The man is dying of thirst in a room with a free faucet nobody told him was there. The woman is dying of exhaustion running a continuous audit of a man who does not know he is being audited and would not pass it if he did, because nobody ever handed him the syllabus. She is running the diagnostic her mother and grandmother ran, on a man who was never given the operating manual, in a culture that insists the manual does not exist. He calls her standards impossible. She calls his needs nonexistent. Both are wrong. Both are reading the wrong map. And the culture that produced the mismatch is collecting the rubble, the birthrate, the empty chairs at the speed-dating events, the sixty-five-year-old men who still remember the one compliment, the forty-two-year-old women in clean apartments whose only heartbeat at the door has four legs.

Here is the truth neither sex wants.

The men who walk away from the woman’s report, who declare the whole thing exhausting and opt for peace and dogs, are not wrong that it is exhausting. They are wrong that opting out is an exit. The sealed man is not free. He is a tomb that walks. He conserved his losses and called it sovereignty, and some nights, in the apartment where nobody waits, even he can hear the difference. His map said the woman’s list was an attack, so he retreated, because nobody told him the list was a diagnostic for a partnership that actually works, and that the only way through it was to become the kind of man the diagnostic was looking for in the first place.

And the women who weaponize the fifty-point report as a weapon for settling scores are running the audit on the wrong variable. The audit was never supposed to produce a man who passes every test. It was supposed to produce a man worth choosing, and a man worth choosing is not the one who never cracks under the fifty points. He is the one who reads the map, understands the architecture underneath it, and stops treating the relationship as a closed deal. The woman who runs the diagnostic on a man she has already decided to reject will find the rejection confirmed, every time, because the diagnostic was always going to confirm the verdict she walked in with. The mechanism does not care who is right.

Neither report is a weapon. Both are manuals for the same machine. The men who refuse to read the women’s manual will keep getting the silence, the papers, the clean apartment with the cat. The women who refuse to read the men’s manual will keep running the audit on a man who is quietly dying of thirst beside them and calling his collapse being low-maintenance.

The faucet is free. The audit is continuous. The two maps describe the same relationship from two sides of the same bed. The culture told you they were enemies. They are not. They are the operating instructions for a machine neither sex was taught to drive, sitting in the same room, starving in opposite ways, blaming each other for the wreckage of a map neither one drew.

Read both. Drive the machine. Or keep standing in the rubble, complaining that the map is wrong.

Part 2 of 2 of What Each Sex Wants. Part 1, What Men Want, is the other side of the same ledger, and it is almost entirely free.

There are two sexes. There will be no Part 3.

Markus Maiwald is the founder of Libertaria. He writes on political philosophy, sovereignty, and the architecture of human relationships. He read both field reports so you would not have to choose between them. You should not choose between them. That is the entire point.
